Speed GPSGPS speedometer

SPEED · ALTITUDE · TRIPS

Speed GPS is a free GPS speedometer app for Android and iPhone. It shows your speed in large figures, on a bike, on a motorbike, in a car, and even on an airliner if you sit near a window, in km/h or mph, with your altitude (GPS altimeter), your position and the satellites in view. It records your trips and exports their track as GPX. No ads, no account, and your speed shows even without internet.

Speed GPS dashboard on Android: GPS speedometer at 36 km/h, maximum speed, altitude 300 m, 27 satellites used and pressure 991 hPa
Speed GPS Track screen on Android: a recorded trip drawn on the map with its altitude profile
Speed GPS Sky View on Android: the position of every GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou satellite in view
Speed GPS on iPhone: large speed dial, compass, altitude and position accuracy

Your speed on foot, by bike, by motorbike or by car

Open the app: your ground speed appears straight away on a large dial, readable at a glance. Choose km/h or mph. The trip's maximum speed stays marked on the dial.

Speed GPS shows the GPS readings as they are. It does not replace a vehicle's approved speedometer or a certified navigation instrument.

Record a trip and export it as GPX

Start recording, then put your phone away: the trip keeps recording with the screen off. When you arrive, you get the distance, duration, average and maximum speed, elevation gain and altitude curve.

Every trip exports to GPX, the standard format for GPS tracks. You can then open it in your hiking, cycling or mapping app.

A GPS altimeter that works without a network

GPS listens to satellites: it does not need the internet. Speed, position, altitude and trip recording therefore work offline, in the mountains, at sea or on a plane. Only the trip's background map needs a connection.

Android and iPhone: two apps, each with its own features

Speed GPS is available on Android and on iPhone. The core is the same: speed, altitude, position, trips and GPX export. Each version makes the most of what its phone can do.

Frequently asked questions

Is Speed GPS free?

Yes. Speed GPS is free and ad-free, on Android and on iPhone. On Android, an optional donation is possible; it does not unlock any feature.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. Speed, position, altitude and trip recording work without a network, because the GPS receives the satellites directly. Only the trip's background map needs a connection.

Can I use it as a speedometer on a bike or motorbike?

Yes. Speed GPS shows the GPS speed in km/h or mph, the average and maximum speed and the distance travelled. It gives the GPS readings as they are and does not replace an approved speedometer.

How do I export a trip as GPX?

Record your trip, then open it in your list of trips and tap Export GPX. The file opens in most hiking, cycling and mapping apps.

Does Speed GPS have a compass?

Yes on iPhone, with true or magnetic north. The Android version has no compass; instead it shows the sky map of the satellites, a 3D globe and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks.

Is the speed shown accurate?

It comes straight from your phone's GPS. The app shows the position accuracy in metres: the smaller this figure, the more reliable the reading. Indoors or between tall buildings, the signal degrades.

Which phones does Speed GPS work on?

On Android 8 or later, through Google Play, and on iPhone with iOS 17 or later, through the App Store.
